Shingeki no Kyojin episode 22 Overview/Summary

Image

By the time I saw the preview for this episode, I thought that it will be an action-packed episode depicting Mikasa, Levi, and the female titan. But suddenly, my assumption was blown by the wind. It became a tear-jerking episode that tortured my heart.

(Levi and Mikasa teamed up)

Anyway, the first scene of the episode is so intense. It shows Levi discapacitating the female titan with the help of Mikasa’s assist. Even though, their team-up is enormous and their rescue plan is going smoothly, Levi’s right foot was injured when Mikasa suddenly jumped out and aim for the nape of female titan (which is not included in their plan) that caused him a “handicap.”

Later on, after they have discapacitated the female titan and have taken back Eren in their custody, the female titan was apparently crying (or she really does; I do think that it’s because of the strikes she got). Going to the next scene, the soldiers of Survey Corps was shown organizing the corpses that were recovered.

(The corpses of the soldiers)

There were two soldiers asking Commander Erwin to recover the body of their acquaintance/close friend that was surrounded by titans. Commander Erwin rejected their request, as well as Levi, to avoid adding up some casualties in their hands. As they proceed in returning inside the wall, the two soldiers earlier have recovered the corpse of their close friend, but in exchange, they were being chase by the titans.

Due to the unfortunate fact that there are no buildings around, the only option they have in their hands is to abandon the corpses to accelerate their pace, so that they can outrun the titans without indulging in a fight with them. As the bodies are being thrown out from the cart, their faces were conquered by gloominess, especially Levi, after seeing Petra’s body being thrown out.

After a few moments, Eren has suddenly dreamed about what happened in the past (but there’s a little variation). Mikasa wake him up as she sees Eren having a nightmare.

Another few moments have passed, they have finally arrived in the inner walls, where they met people’s lament. At the same time, Petra’s father approached Levi, saying things such as “Well, as her father, she’s too young to marry, and she have to experience many things first.” (In the words of Petra’s father, it was hinted that Petra has feelings for Levi, and apparently, wants to marry him).

On the other hand, Eren saw the two children he spotted peeping earlier in a window of a house before they held their excursion for taking back his old home (in the 16th or 17th episode).

As the two children possesses cheerful faces, Eren suddenly unleashed an unexpected wailing due to his remorse.

   Author’s comment:

As what I have mentioned in the start of this review, I thought that this episode will be teem by action and intense feeling, but I was wrong. I didn’t truly shed a single drop of tear in this episode, but my heart was conquered by grief. Anyway, I really love this episode despite of having gloomy scenes. Addition to that, I realized in this episode that Levi is not an entirely heartless jerk that doesn’t give a damn to the people around him. In fact, he’s a kind and caring person, (well, it’s not obvious to his looks though) He just threw his human emotions to lessen the nuisances and burden while opposing the titans. And due to that fact, I can continue to love/ him without thinking anything else, but Eren is still my no. 1.

Author’s rating for this episode: 10/10

Eren Jaegar’s Character – My Appraisal

I decided to make this appraisal to show my admiration towards Eren Jaegar. What I’m going to mention in this appraisal or evaluation is what I PERSONALLY think about Eren’s character. The anime is currently airing and on its halfway already so this appraisal is going to cover until then. One last thing, this appraisal has spoilers in it so make sure that before you read this, you already watched the episodes that were covered here or you’re reading the manga. Okay, I’m going to start now.

Image

Eren Jaegar is the male protagonist in the anime Shingeki no Kyojin, depicted by many as the best anime of 2013 (I totally agree with this!). I thought at the first episode of the anime, Eren is just going to be a mundane protagonist like what the other shounen animes have. As you can see, he’s an annoying brat on the start so that’s why I came to that conclusion. But what I had deducted was not entirely right, when he graduated from that soldier school (I don’t know what I suppose to call it, I guess it’s recon corps academy? okay whatever it is) he became alluring to my vision when I completely realized the perseverance, determination, industry & tenacity wrap in his being. Despite of being a normal person, he never fell in desperation like the other human beings did though being par in terms of domination strength with the giant monsters is pretty impossible to achieve and there’s a big possibility of losing, this is one of the significant reasons why I liked him or probably the main reason.

Image

That time when he discovered that he can manipulate a titan is one of the fascinating scenes in the series I never thought there will be a shocking twist, anyway afterwards, my admiration towards him grew more heftier than before. Making him my “modern hero”. That idea came up in myself these recent days, this is the incident how I said so:

Last few days, our English instructor asked us this question: “Who is your hero?”. The first name that popped out in my mind at that time was “Eren Jaegar”. And two days after, the question was asked again, on this time, the question was like this: “who is your modern hero” and like before his name popped out again in my mind. So since then, I decided to declare Eren as my “modern hero”.

I’m done with my self description of his character/personality now, I’m going to proceed in sharing my thoughts and observations about his relationship about the following characters:

His Parents:

Image

Even though, sometimes he kinda acts as a discourteous son towards his parents, (episode 1) especially on his mother, he still treasures them, as shown in the first episode when the colossal titan broke the wall, he hasted to confirm if his mother was fine and when the latter died he became mournful, addition to that he sworn to slay all the titans with his bare hands just to get revenge for his mother and also for the mankind.

Mikasa Ackerman:

Image

Mikasa is the adopted sister of Eren. The latter is very significant to her as shown in many instances. One of these is where Eren was speculated to be dead due to the fact that he was eaten alive by a titan. Mikasa lost her concentration in fighting and fell into despair. Eren is shown to reject Mikasa’s offer of help every time I think it’s because he wants to do anything all by himself and maybe he wants to take away Mikasa from danger, we all know that she possesses an enormous fighting skills but she’s still a girl and sometimes she can be fragile as well. Not sure if there’s romance revolving around them but base on my deduction they’ll not gonna end up in that kind of relationship eventually.

Armin Arlert:

Image

He is a childhood friend of Eren and they really have an excellent relationship. They’re helping each other when facing a decisive problem as shown when Armin tried to convince one of the commander that treated them as a foe for mankind; When Armin was almost eaten by a titan and Eren saved him from certain death, sacrificing himself instead of Armin.

The anime adaptation was my reference in doing this. I’m not reading the manga because I want to see the next happenings in action.
